How we use AI

People-led. AI-enabled.

the right Toolkit

Not a Substitute

At Health and Life Sciences Digital, we believe that artificial intelligence is an extremely powerful tool. However, it is just a tool, not a substitute for experience, judgement or accountability.

Our consultants bring decades of experience delivering complex digital programmes across healthcare, life sciences and the public sector. That expertise remains at the heart of the work we do. We use AI alongside our people where it can improve speed, consistency, analysis and productivity, allowing our specialists to spend more of their time on the areas where human expertise adds the greatest value.

Volume work

Where AI does the heavy lifting

We use AI where it can efficiently support activities such as reviewing and structuring large volumes of information, identifying themes and patterns, comparing documents and requirements, summarising material, supporting research, checking consistency and producing initial working drafts.

Used well, AI can undertake in minutes some of the repetitive analytical and administrative work that would traditionally consume many hours of consultancy time. This allows us to work more efficiently and gives our clients greater value from the specialist expertise they are paying for.

experience matters

Where our people lead

AI does not understand an organisation, its people or its challenges in the way an experienced consultant does.
Our people therefore lead the areas that require context, experience, judgement and accountability. These include understanding the problem, defining strategy, engaging with stakeholders, challenging assumptions, managing risk, designing governance, interpreting evidence and making recommendations.

Our consultants review, challenge and validate AI-assisted work before it forms part of a client deliverable. We do not outsource professional judgement to an algorithm.

For high-impact decisions — including those relating to clinical safety, procurement, governance, information governance or significant organisational change — responsibility remains with appropriately experienced people.

Responsible use

We use AI proportionately and only where it adds genuine value.

Client confidentiality, information governance and data protection remain fundamental. Sensitive, confidential or patient-identifiable information is not provided to public AI services. Where AI tools are used with client information, their use must be appropriate to the information involved, the technology must provide suitable safeguards, and any relevant client policies or requirements must be observed.

We also recognise that AI can be wrong. Outputs may contain inaccuracies, omissions or bias. AI-generated material is therefore treated as input to professional work rather than unquestioned fact and is subject to appropriate human review and verification.

The best of both

Technology + People

We believe the most effective model is neither people instead of AI nor AI instead of people.

It is experienced people using the best available technology intelligently.

AI gives our consultants the ability to analyse more, work faster and remove unnecessary administrative effort. Our people provide the experience, context, judgement, relationships and accountability required to turn that capability into the right outcome for the client.

Technology provides the leverage. People provide the judgement.
